What is Park Güell
Park Güell is one of the world’s most well-known and gorgeous tourist attractions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is occupied by vibrant vegetation and architecture with a unique Spanish character. Originally imagined as a private residential area, Gaudí was tasked with developing this space, which began to take shape in 1900. After many years, this private property transformed into a public park for the world to see.

Why I Wanted to Visit Park Güell
Who remembers The Cheetah Girls? In their second hit movie, The Cheetah Girls travel to Barcelona and roam through the streets singing and dancing. Park Güell is one of the places they strut through in their hit song, “Strut.” That movie came out when I was four years old, and ever since then, I have dreamt of coming to Barcelona to recreate that memory. Finally being inside Park Güell felt like the nostalgic, full-circle moment I always longed for.

My Experience
Since I live on the outskirts of Barcelona, Park Güell was just a train and bus ride away. I arrived at the park in the early afternoon with one of my new friends, who is also a fellow Language Assistant with the Meddeas program. Upon entering the park, we could hear people playing live music and the sounds of the trees blowing in the wind – a very tranquil, culture-filled atmosphere. After taking plenty of photos, we visited La Casa de Gaudí, where we had a deeper look at Gaudí’s personal life and signature design. Touring Gaudí’s house and learning more about the history of Park Güell gave me a new appreciation for him and his work. I am excited to explore his other designs, such as La Sagrada Familia. Lastly, after leaving Park Güell, we walked through the city and found a restaurant called Tapeo, where we ate tapas before heading home.

My Advice for Visiting Park Güell
- To get into Park Güell, you have to purchase a ticket. Make sure you purchase your ticket from an official site online.
- What to bring: snacks, a water bottle, an umbrella, a camera, a portable charger, good walking shoes, and money to buy souvenirs and food.
- Do not eat at the restaurants located directly outside of Park Güell. They are targeted toward tourists; thus, they are likely more expensive and less tasty. Walk further through the city and find a restaurant where locals dine.
