As a recent graduate of an Environment degree, you can imagine I am the type of person who is eager to see all the world has to offer. Becoming a Language Assistant with Meddeas allows me to prepare for my next adventure: move abroad to teach English and start a new chapter in the enchanting city of Madrid.
Times I’ve Moved Abroad
Moving to University
I found moving away to university as daunting as anyone, but grew to love the quaint English city of York that I would go on to call “home” for the next 3 years. The experience of moving to a new place, unlike anywhere I had ever been before, was life-changing. This allowed me to bond with strangers who have become family, discover new parts of myself, learn how to survive on my own, and basically, become an adult! Doing this alongside people from different cities and countries from different cultures and all walks of life made the entire experience a lot less isolating and a lot more exciting. I have always known I wanted to see the world but was never sure how to make it happen. This way, I can visit Spain authentically, absorbing the beautiful culture of Madrid, whilst making an impact on young people.
Moving to Spain as a Child
As a child, I experienced the impact of a Language Assistant firsthand. When I was 9, my family moved to Cádiz. As an English child who had spent her whole life in a small town, I did not speak a word of Spanish. Fortunately, the incredible Language Assistants at my school dedicated their time and patience to helping me learn the language. Even with surface-level skills, it allowed me to interact with my peers and gain enough confidence to speak it outside of school, and even teach my family.
Covid-19 Lockdown
Many years later, during England’s first COVID-19 lockdown, I found myself, like many others, in a position where they suddenly had to become an educator with no experience. My, at the time, 6-year-old sister had to stay at home and could no longer attend school. With my parents at work, it was up to me to ensure she did not miss out on school. Every day, I would make up games that allowed her to engage in basic English and maths, and took a liking to it. I felt proud of what we were achieving together, and we both had a lot of fun doing it. In such a strange time when many things felt wrong, teaching my little sister felt right.
Being a Language Assistant: A Way to Move Abroad and Teach English
I never knew what I wanted to do after graduating. Part of me wanted to stay in England and do a Master’s degree, and the other part of me knew it was time to branch out and start seeing the world. Looking back on all these feelings, I decided to become a Language Assistant felt like the most suitable thing to do. It covered all the bases: teaching, travelling, and learning.
After much research, I ruled out all the other companies and chose Meddeas due to its amazing support system and past participants’ experiences. I knew moving away from all my loved ones again would be difficult. If I could do it once, what’s stopping me from doing it again? I also knew acquiring a visa would be a demanding process, but I have already been supported by the Admissions Team. They are as determined as me to make the process as smooth as possible.
University prepared me for an exciting life in ways I never would have expected. I expect that my journey with Meddeas will do the same. I cannot wait to see what becoming a Language Assistant with Meddeas has to offer.
