One of the greatest appeals of the Meddeas Language Assistant Program was undoubtedly the opportunity it afforded to travel, both within Spain and beyond. Since arriving at the end of September, there have already been ample opportunities to integrate some trips in-and-around the Language Assistant schedule, the most notable of which being a weekend spent exploring a small pocket of the Basque region.
Whether you’re yearning for a picturesque seafront framed by striking mountains and perfect for a sunset promenade, or following your foodie intuition through the architecturally stunning Old Town filled with iconic Basque cuisine, one thing is certain: San Sebastián has it all. Tracing back to the 19th-century trend of Europeans coming for their ‘summers’, the allure of the city is by no means a recent phenomenon. While it is hard to do this iconic location justice without experiencing it for themselves, my hope is that this written recount can be preserved as an ode to one truly unforgettable experience (and a potential source of inspiration for other fellow travellers…)

So, where shall we begin? When one recalls the primary source of San Sebastián’s fame, it seems appropriate that the first thing to be addressed is the culinary culture. Renowned as one of the world’s ‘foodie hotspots’, San Sebastián maintains its status owing to its complementary blend of fine-dining and affordable tasting experiences. While the city boasts the greatest number of Michelin-starred restaurants per square kilometer, such avant-garde options seemed matched in numbers by nondescript (‘hole-in-the-wall’) gems that equally embody the city’s culinary passions but at far more affordable price tags. For a group of young Language Assistants, this ensured that no stone was left unturned (or more appropriately, no food was left untasted) as we immersed ourselves in the city’s charms.
Certainly, the variety of the pintxos ensured there were ample options for all, of course, accompanied by a delicious sample of the region’s wine and followed closely by a slice of the iconic Basque cheesecake. Although it would be near impossible to select just one dish, a personal recommendation (for those feeling adventurous) would have to be the renowned baked sea urchin – a wholly unique explosion of flavour that is simply unmatched.

However, while the notability of the food scene is undeniable, San Sebastián deserves equal credit for its spectacular scenery. Situated amongst striking mountain ranges, any visitor will have ample opportunities to get their steps in with options such as hiking up Monte Igeldo or exploring the adjacent Monte Urgell and stopping for a drink at Urgelleko Polboriña. While either option provides breathtaking views over La Kontxa Bay and Santa Clara island, those yearning for a slower-paced holiday will be just as satisfied with an afternoon spent lying on the beach or tumbling in the waves. For those early risers, I would highly recommend awakening in time to witness a beachfront sunrise (and maybe even hoping in for a morning swim – although this may be a weather-dependent suggestion).
Beyond these natural sights, San Sebastián’s kaleidoscopic blend of French, Spanish and Basque influences is unmistakable in the way its architecture and culture seem to echo the romantically charming spirit of the belle èpoque era. Whether taking a walk around Lo Viejo—the Old Town—, witnessing one of the city’s many local artist pop-ups, or timing a visit to coincide with festivals such as Jazzaldia music fest, it is certain there is something for everybody in this regard as well.
What this recount goes to show is that San Sebastián deserves serious consideration for anyone planning their next adventures. While a visit to this city alone would be undoubtedly memorable, it would be remiss not to mention that this city could mark merely one stop on a Basque adventure. Certainly, while the focus here has been on one small part of the region (with our visit to Bilbao deserving its own dedicated post), it’s safe to say that the Basque Country’s allure, charm, and individuality make it a destination well worth visiting, with no shortage of places to explore.
