What is the Student Visa Extension?
The Student Visa Extension is a procedure that allows foreign students who are receiving academic training in Spain to extend their stay in the country to continue their studies.
It also allows Language Assistants to continue in Spain through this type of program.
What are the requirements to request an extension of the student visa in Spain?
The Spanish authority has the following requirements for the renewal of the student visa:
- Provide a certificate that shows that you have passed the studies that you came to do in the first place or that you have completed the Language Assistant program.
- Be admitted to an educational center/Language Assistant program*.
- Prove that you have enough savings (€600 per month of stay in Spain).
- Have private health insurance.
- Be a citizen of a country that does not belong to the European Union.
- Not having entry to Spain prohibited.
- Your Visa must be issued in 2025, as you can only renew it once.
- You must remain in the same nature of the Program, not changing from Public to Private (or Private to Public).
*The studies or program that you are going to start must be related to those you have completed in Spain and must be at least of the same level or higher.
Who can request the student visa renewal?
Foreign citizens who obtained their SLU/SSU visa (studies/Language Assistant) in 2025, and who are citizens of a country that allows them to travel to Spain as a tourist without the need for a visa (you can consult the countries here).
What are the necessary documents to request an extension of a student visa?
How long does the process of extending the student visa in Spain take?
Processing time may vary, but can generally take several months. The processing allows you to continue with the activity until the resolution is obtained. Our team will monitor your procedure and will inform you by email of any new developments or additional requirements.
What is the cost of a student visa extension in Spain?
Public administration fees are €17.49 (updated as of May 2024). Our team will provide you with detailed information on the costs associated with the process (medical insurance, etc.) as well as the different services that you can hire with Meddeas.
What happens if my application is rejected?
In case your application is rejected, our team will provide you with advice and options to appeal the decision. In the event of refusal for reasons beyond your control, the amount of the services hired with Meddeas will be refunded. The amount related to public administration fees and medical insurance is not refundable.
